Here’s a creative solution to the Vineyard’s workforce housing crunch. Island Housing Trust is renovating Vineyard Haven’s historic Hanover House Inn as year-round rental housing for Martha’s Vineyard Hospital employees. Built in 1910, the property will consist of 3 apartments with 12 bedrooms, each with private baths, for income-qualified health care personnel. Units will share a common kitchen, dining room and laundry area.
As the Island’s largest employer, the hospital’s biggest recruitment problem is lack of housing and this partnership is a big first step. Many employees are commuting from off-Island daily due to the lack of affordable housing.
A recent $10,000 donation from Cape Cod Five Bank will go directly toward the completion of the project, which is expected to be ready by May 1.
